Mother of pearl is the iridescent coating on the inside of mollusk shells also known as nacre. The undulating grain of mother of pearl is the result of seasonal fluctuations in the mollusk's diet. The dark organic material is laid down during the winter months and the nacre is laid down in the warmer summer months. Most mother of pearl on the market has been bleached to achieve a brighter white. In caring for mother-of-pearl beads, be aware that alcohol will eat through the nacre, causing irreparable damage to the color and luster.

Mother of pearl is said to help promote an easy flow of feelings and sensitivities to others, keep one connected to family and particularly children. It is also believed to promote harmony in relationships

Among the chief sources of this gemstone are the pearl oyster, found in warm and tropical seas, chiefly in Asia; the freshwater pearl mussel, which lives in many rivers of the United States and Europe; and the abalone of California (U.S.A.), Japan and other Pacific regions.

Sterling silver is a white, highly reflective precious metal composed of 925 parts of pure silver and 75 parts alloy, usually copper. Copper provides the silver with sufficient hardness and wearing qualities, as pure silver is sometimes considered too soft to be used or worn everyday.

At times, we oxidize or "antique" our finished sterling pieces to blacken the recessed areas, and then rub the rest of the piece to a high white shine. Oxidizing can give a piece of jewelry wonderful depth and rustic feel.
